When you think of Nandos, whats the first thing that comes to mind? Chicken, piri piri or butterfly burgers?
What if I told you that they actually sell vegan and vegetarian options? In fact they have sold a small selection for a while now but only recently has the menu had some new additions added and it all looks very exciting.
To be honest, even though I am a huge meat eater I do occasionally enjoy meat free meals at home and do a lot of cooking too. So when i was invited a long to try out some of Nando’s new food I was thrilled.
On arrival I was seated in a booth with a few fellow local bloggers and we were invited to look at the new menu and make a selection from The Classics. Where you could still get either a burger, wrap or pitta and then served with either one or two sides. Some of the options we had consisted of:
Sweet Potato and Butternut – price range £6.45-£9.95
With red pepper, onion, edamame beans and a hint of paprika.
SuperGreen – price range £6.45-£9.95
Full of the green stuff – broccoli, edamame beans and kale with a touch of mint.
Beanie – price range £6.45-£9.95
Cheddar cheese, chickpeas and sweetcorn with lentils, peas and pumpkin seeds.
Whilst we all had a good browse at the new menu, the waiter brought my favourite starter out. Humous with peri-peri drizzle…i could honestly eat the whole bowl of this stuff to myself. Its so good, but i reserved myself!
After much deliberation I ended up opting for the sweet potato and butternut wrap, something very different from what I usually order. Its usually burgers all the way for me but having this in a wrap made sense due to the filling on offer. I am glad I did as it was amazing, packed full of flavour from the sweet potato and butternut squash, then the smoky flavours from the paprika. It came together really well and i thoroughly enjoyed it.
But that isn’t the only thing on the menu though, another option from the classics is a portobello mushroom and halloumi. Which i am led to believe is a very popular choice and i wouldn’t mind giving it a go.
We also got to sample some of the new sides and salads that have been given an update too.
I will start with the salads; now a salad is a salad to me and theres not much you can do to make a salad exciting is there? But how wrong i could be! The salads on offer here are very tasty, maybe a bit too much leaf for me but still very tasty. My favourite on the menu was the Grain and Greens, this comes as vegan or can become a meat option by adding chicken. I love the crunch of the tender stem broccoli, it just added a little bit more excitement to the salad.
Another salad on offer, which at first sight i thought seemed rather strange but it tasted really refreshing. Watermelon and feta salad, the watermelon added a lot to this salad with the sweet summer taste then the creamy feta crumbled on top, definitely a top summer dish from Nando’s!
Tasty side dishes
The new tasty side dishes on offer were tasty too.
New to the menu is the grain and greens, tender stem broccoli, roasted sweet potato and butternut squash, which was served with wilted spinach and crumbled feta.
Another little favourite of mine was the saucy spinach, it adds a good healthy option to any dish, both meat or vegetarian options. The baby spinach is cooked in a spicy tomato and coconut sauce with chickpeas. It may not sound overly exciting, but it tastes good.
The food on the menu isn’t the only thing thats new either. Now i am no interiors boffin – but i did notice that they have updated all the plates and I am liking them.
If you havent been along to Nandos for a while – i suggest a revisit. Or if you never gave it a try as you thought it was only all about the chicken…then think again…its got something for everyone.
Disclosure: I was invited along to Nandos to try out the new menu: all images and thoughts are my own.
